Surge arrestors are designed to offer protection against lightning and switching surges.
Lightning can either be :-
- direct strike (hitting over-head cable) etc or
- “nearby strike”. A massive voltage impulse can be generated on power systems due to the high lightning electromagnetic field caused by a nearby strike. So even if the facility has Lightning protection at the main board the surge can be generated at the sub-board level.
Switching high loads causes over-voltages, these switching over-voltages can interfere with or occasionally destroy electrical devices. Long runs of parallel power and data lines increase the prevalence of this effect.
