Our Controllers are Relay Great!

Power Capacitors Ltd. is proud to unveil the latest in Reactive Power Relay, the RPRPFRX+12.

The new Reactive Power Control relay design has allowed major improvements on the previous family of control relays to be implemented.

Firstly as the core processor and memory have been improved it has allowed the algorithm used to calculate the required switching to be improved –

  1. Rotational switching (i.e. not switching the same stage in and out so as to share out the switching loads across the contactors more evenly),
  2. Combination switching (if the relay senses that a single stage will be bettered suited than the 2 stages in circuit it will switch that in and the two stages out)
  3. Faster response to changes in load

Secondly the relay has extra inputs for environmental considerations

  1. A high temperature setting can be programmed so that if this is exceeded the relay will switch stages out to reduce the output of the unit so reducing the losses – this allows for some correction to be maintained even if the ambient temperature is too high
  2. Harmonics are measured and a limit can be set – capacitors are damaged by and can amplify system harmonics –this setting operates used as above i.e. the relay will switch stages out if the harmonic limit is exceeded this protects not only the system but also the capacitors.
  3. The relay regularly checks that each stage hasn’t “lost” output rating – at a pre-determined level the relay will highlight this as a failed stage – so highlighting the need to investigate the failure.
  4. The relay will keep a count of how many times each stage has operated so allowing for planned preventative maintenance of the contactors to be instigated.
  5. The relay also clocks running time so reminding that a service/maintenance check is due.

There are also improvements in user functions – alarms are much easier to cancel and the variables that the relay uses to calculate switching (current, voltage, harmonics, temperature etc) can be interrogated.
