The massive uptake in all industries of Variable Speed Drives, L.E.D. lighting, High-Tech Information Technology systems and all other related technologies is gradually polluting the Electrical Distribution system, to the point where many users are now suffering the disruptive and expensive effects of poor Power Quality.
Whilst these technologies are making positive steps into reducing energy consumption, they are often a hidden polluter of the incoming mains supply.
The waveform in this image is the actual load current at a plastics factory. It looks nothing like a sine wave, and the distribution equipment in place is simply not designed to cope with this level of pollution. The irony of this situation is that the greater the uptake of energy efficient devices, the greater the level of pollution of the mains. Ultimately, the factory ends up standing it its own mess, which inevitably takes its toll.
In many cases, we see production adversely affected by tripping drives, glitching I.T. systems, burned out control cards, and many other common effects of this type of pollution. At best, this is an inconvenience, at worst, it may result in the failure of hundreds of thousands of pounds-worth of high-tech equipment, with the associated costs of lost production and low levels of customer satisfaction.
